The S.S. Enterprise NX-01 is equipped with a total of twenty-six scientific labs and fifteen rotating research labs.
Most of the ship’s scientific labs are dedicated to particular scientific areas due to equipment and instruments
being specific to certain tasks or fields. Separate testing facilities would also be necessary to protect against
threat of cross contamination. To help maintain a flexible facility, research labs could be modified to handle a
specific mission or field as needed. A number of smaller experimentation labs are also available to the ship’s
science division.

As a supplement to the ship’s personnel, each science officer is cross trained in multiple fields. This helps to
maintain the vessel’s effectiveness as a broad-range self contained research station. For example, the ship’s
exobotanist would also be well versed in exomicrobiology and mineral analyses. Since both fields would be
related to their primary field of research the officer would be able to be shift their concentration when a mission
deemed it necessary. On a larger scale, full departments are cross-trained to serve in other departments. For
example, staff from the exobiology departments would also be able to pose as nurses or medical research
teams. Many of the people from the physical science departments would be able to serve as maintenance or
engineering personnel.

Any research vessels sent out to explore space would have to be equipped to handle every scientific field in some
capacity. Here is a list of the scientific fields being researched onboard the S.S. Enterprise NX-01:

Aside from diplomacy, the primary mission of the Enterprise is basic exploration. Rather than executing
exhaustive research missions, the ship will spend several days or weeks executing a mission before moving on
to the next. This requires the scientific departments to be able to handle and process a large amount of raw data
and make scientific summaries of any given region of space in a short amount of time. These evaluations, along
with any data collected, are then transmitted back to Earth for further evaluation and research. If a region of space,
interstellar phenomena, planetary body, or exobiological is deemed worthy of further study, a dedicated science
vessel is then dispatched for continued field research.

Despite her primary use for brief exploratory missions, the S.S Enterprise NX-01 is host for two important long
term research assignments, stellar cartography and warp field theory. These long-term missions benefit greatly
from the vessel’s continued travels through interstellar space. Even though data is being constantly transmitted
back to Starfleet, much of the data evaluation, lab work, research studies and field studies are accomplished
aboard ship. Starfleet also uses the NX-01 as a test bed for new equipment and technology. Engineering
personnel and the Physical Science department are continually evaluating and field testing this experimental
hardware for the starship engineers on Earth.

On occasion the vessel is required to go beyond basic scientific evaluation for certain scientific situations. For
example, medical rescue operations, planetary disasters or intense data collection for a mission will require the
science departments to go beyond their normal duties. Though these occasions are rare, the Enterprise is
properly equipped for this type of intense research.
