EPISODE DATA ANALYSIS
Alien Species: Novian Diggers and some rather muddy human colonists
Stellar Phenomenon: Planet Terra Nova
Technology Encountered: S.S. Conestoga, Stun Grenade
Historical Facts:
Earth had managed to establish New Berlin on Moon, Utopia Planetia on Mars and a few asteroid colonies by
the time the Terra Nova Post was established. At the time of the colony launch, the Space Agency (or United
Space Agency as it would later be know in Kirk’s time) oversaw Earth’s space vessels.
The Terra Nova colony was established using a ship called the S.S. Conestoga, commanded by Captain Mitchell
and launched in 2069. The planet they chose was the closest uninhabited but habitable planet at a “near” twenty
light years away. At the time the colony was established, it would have taken them nine years to reach it from
Earth. Once reaching their destination, the colony dismantled their ship to construct habitats and shelters. This
innovative plan helped to lessen the cargo and extra resources required on the long voyage.
Terra Nova means "New Land" or "New Earth" in Latin.
This episode introduces the concept of a stun grenade. The device would not be seen until the last episode of
the first season and then again in season three, for use by the MACO’s.
Phase Pistols can be used to cut through objects and materials.
Phlox mentions cytolytic injections as a way to treat cancer.
We are finally given the name of Phlox’s race in this episode. They are called the Denobulans.
Production Facts:
This episode was directed by LeVar Burton who played Gerodi LaForge in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Burton has directed numerous episodes of Star Trek from all four recent incarnations of the franchise.
India born actor/comedian Erick Avari makes an appearance as Jamin in this episode. He is a well know face in
genre circles having starred in several popular movies like Stargate, Independence Day, Daredevil and Planet of
the Apes. He has also guest starred in almost every major science fiction television show produced since the
early 1990’s with roles on Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, SeaQuest DSV, Babylon
5, The X-Files, Alias and Heroes.
Mary Carver, who guessed starred as Nadet, was once married to Joseph Sargent who directed “The Corbomite
Maneuver” from Star Trek: The Original Series.
The stenciled font featured on a bulkhead that Archer shows to T’Pol in the Terra Nova colony is very similar in
design to the type found on the S.S. Valiant’s flight recorder in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode, “Where
No Man Has Gone Before”.
While the colony is supposed to have been made up of pieces of their transport ship, much of the Terra Nova
colony is actually constructed from recycled set pieces. On closer examination you can see parts of Voyager’s
hologrid, Borg support structures and Romulan Street lamps all painted down to look old and rusty.
