SYNOPSIS
When Trip is sent to help repair a Xyrillian ship, he finds himself having a friendly encounter with one of the ship's
female engineers. But soon after returning to Enterprise, he discovers that their "special moment" has resulted in
something entirely unexpected. He is pregnant. Now Archer and crew must try to locate the Xyrillians in the hope
of transferring the rapidly growing embryo to another host before Trip becomes a father… or a mother.
EPISODE DATA ANALYSIS
Alien Species: Felebians, Xryillians
Technology Encountered: Gravity Plating, Holograms, Medical Imaging Chamber
Historical Facts:
In this episode Charles Tucker makes Star Trek history as being the first and only male that we know of to have
become pregnant.
We may have seen Trek characters having a bath or sonic shower in the previous shows but “Unexpected” gives
us a glimpse of an actual shower on the NX-01. In the same scene we are treated to one of Star Trek’s rare
weightless moments that unfortunately comes to a rather abrupt and painful end for the unsuspecting Captain.
This episode introduces the Mess Hall’s beverage dispenser and its voice recognition capabilities. This
technology is surprisingly a rare thing aboard the Enterprise.
Plomeek broth is mentioned and we learn that it is primarily consumed as a first meal.
The medical imaging chamber and its moving examination table is used for the first time during Trip's prenatal
exam.
Phlox also mentions the drug mirazine which is used to shorten decompression time.
Malcolm indicates the Captain’s Quarters are on E Deck.
We also learn the nacelles use and expel plasma.
This episode marks the introduction of the concept of holo-projections to humans.
The Klingon D7 battle cruiser featured in this episode is the only type of starship that has appeared in all five
different Star Trek series.
Even though the Klingons prefer to stick with their ship designs, they do like to change their wardrobe. In this era
warriors dress in exotic leathers and the clothing is constructed in a much more primitive fashion than their 24th
century counterparts. Instead of the formal steel grey with metal accents, it looks like browns, fur and raw edges
are what's gracing the runways on Qo’noS in this era.
Trip’s favorite food is catfish, Archer saved his life several years before this, and Ensign Almack and a crewman
named Billy are members of his engineering team.
Production Facts:
Guest star Randy Oglesby has made several Star Trek appearances. The first was in Star Trek: The Next
Generation as a member of Riva's chorus in "Loud As A Whisper", twice more on Deep Space Nine, and once in
Star Trek: Voyager. But his most notable appearance was the reoccurring character of Degra in the third season
of Enterprise.
Julianne Christie, who plays Ah’len, also guest starred on Star Trek: Voyager as Dexa in the episode
“Homestead”.
Most of the food seen served aboard the Enterprise (and other ships) was prepared by food stylist Dorothy Duder.
Her husband, illustrator Doug Drexler, is the designer of the NX-01. Drexler began his career as an Academy
Award winning make-up artist before finding his way into Michael Okuda’s art department during production of
The Next Generation. He also worked on Deep Space Nine, Voyager and several of the Star Trek movies.
(Actually much of this site was inspired by his work on Enterprise. I owe a great thanks to Mr. Drexler.)
In this episode we see yet another piece of the Borg Queen’s Chamber reused in the series. The Xyrillian engine
core is actually the Queen’s regeneration and body assembly alcove turned on its side and redressed with coiled
tubing. The basic structure of this set piece was first created for the lift in Data’s Lab, first seen in the Star Trek:
The Next Generation episode “The Offspring”.
