EPISODE DATA ANALYSIS
Alien Species: Archtonian Nocturnal Marsupial, Trip’s Sleeping Bag Bug, Unknown Lethal Species of Wildflower
Stellar Phenomenon: Archer IV, Loracus Prime, Titan
Technology Encountered: Y-500 Class Freighter
Historical Facts:
In the computer records taken from the USS Defiant in the episode, “A Mirror Darkly, Part II”, it is revealed that the
planet discovered in this episode will eventually be designated Archer IV. Archer IV is also mentioned in the Star
Trek: The Next Generation episode "Yesterday's Enterprise". The legitimacy of these references remains a
mystery since both were made in “alternate universe” episodes of a Trek series.
This is the first time the show makes reference to a Minshara-Class Planet. Minshara or Class M refers to a
planet capable of supporting humanoid life.
As of this episode, T’Pol has been to thirty-six Minshara-Class Planets.
According to Trip, the Enterprise crew compliment is 82 crew members.
Travis mentions the Y-500-Class Freighters (and the fact that they have life pods) in his camp fire ghost story. (If
you look at the freighter’s designation it could be speculated that it has a kinship to Khan’s vessel, the Botany
Bay.)
We get our first reference in the series to plomeek soup and see T’Pol use the Vulcan nerve pinch for the first
time.
Phlox mentions the drug inaprovaline, which is used as cardio-stimulatory and introduced in the Star Trek: The
Next Generation episode “Transfigurations”.
Starfleet training includes preparation in mind altering substances as well as extensive E/V training.
As a clue to Archer’s water polo obsession, we see him playing with a polo ball in his quarters. (Archer’s water
polo obsession is also shared by Scott Bakula.)
We are also introduced to Trip's trusty camera.
This episode features the second of only four uses of the transporter by a crew member in the first season.
During its operation here, Reed informs us that the phase discriminators do not have the ability to screen out
debris that may have contaminated the matter stream.
Production Facts:
This episode marks the first appearance for the late Kellie Waymire in the series. She would go on to play the
ship’s entomologist, Elizabeth Cutler, two more times before tragically succumbing to a cardiac arrhythmia on
November 13, 2003.
Fans may have also noticed a distinct change in the way production filmed the standing cave sets. Instead of
having an indirect diffused light emanating from an unexplained or hidden source, they instead chose to shoot
the sets more realistically. Cavern scenes in Enterprise were lit from either handheld or visible light sources that
created a much more stark but natural appearance.
Director David Livingston began his Trek career as the Unit Production Manager on the pilot episode Star Trek:
The Next Generation. He would later become a Producer and serve as one on Star Trek: The Next Generation,
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and the first season of Star Trek: Voyager before choosing to become a full time
director. Actually his first directing job was on the The Next Generation episode “The Mind’s Eye” and would go
on to helm sixty-three Trek episodes before the end of Enterprise.
