SEASON 1
SYNOPSIS
After being in space for ten months, the crew finally has a chance to partake in some much deserved R&R on the
tropical planet of Risa. Once they land on the planets surface, Archer, Hoshi, Travis, Malcolm, and Trip all have
decidedly different experiences, good and bad. Meanwhile, on
Enterprise, Phlox enters his annual hibernation
cycle until Travis has an accident.

EPISODE DATA ANALYSIS

Species Encountered: Ravis’ species (Name Unpronounceable), Risan, Risan Sea Turtles

Stellar Phenomenon: Risa, Vega Reticuli

Phlox’s Pets: Regulan Blood Worms

Historical Facts:
This episode marks the first time we see Phlox’s quarters and his hibernation cycle. Even though he usually
sleeps for six days, he can, if needed, still feel refreshed if he only rests for two. But with Mayweather’s accident,
we find out just how functional (and amusing) Denobulans can be when they go without their beauty sleep. As a
human once said, there can be no rest for the weary.

The book T'Pol gives to Archer is "The Teachings of Surak: Complete and Unabridged – Translated from the
Vulcan by Skon of Shi'Khar". According to dialog in the movie
Star Trek: The Search for Spock, Skon is the father
of Sarek and grandfather of Spock. We learn later in the fourth season that this book is incomplete. It is unknown
if Skon made revisions to his translation.

The inhabitants of the Vega Reticuli system live to be more than 300 hundred years.

Located on Risa is Galatha, which is known for its challenging rock climbing. It boasts a cliff face that changes
pitch and hand holds as a person climbs, making it exceedingly difficult and very dangerous.

This episode also reveals that Travis is allergic to benzethonium chloride, which is used as a pain killer on Risa.

As of this episode, Hoshi knows forty languages.

Production Facts:
Unfortunately, this episode marks Kellie Waymire's final appearance as Elizabeth Cutler before her death in
November 2003. Kellie’s abilities were featured in several amazing shows but her small role as Cutler will
always be one of her most memorable. Through her sweet and charismatic performance, she found her way into
the hearts of many fans of
Enterprise. She is missed.

Rudolf Martin, who plays Hoshi’s linguistic interest Ravis, has been featured in several genre favorites such as
Stargate SG-1, 24, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Dexter.

The beautiful Dey Young makes another Trek appearance as the mysterious Keyla. She previously guest starred
as Arissa in the
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode “A Simple Investigation” and on The Next Generation as
Hannah Bates in “The Masterpiece Society”. Young has also been seen in episodes of
Melrose Place, Picket
Fences
, The Practice, Boston Legal and T.J. Hooker.

Joseph Will makes his second appearance as Rostov. The character would return again one last time in the
second season episode “The Crossing”.

Many of you know the director of this episode, Michael Dorn, as Lieutenant Commander Worf on
Star Trek: The
Next Generation
and its spin-off movies, as well as in Deep Space Nine. This is Dorn’s fourth and last directing
assignment for Trek.

There are some interesting things to look for concerning the Production Design in this episode. For example the
switch plates in Archer’s villa are small versions of the Risan fertility idol, called a Horgan. The wall sconces on
the patio date all the way back to Dr. Soong’s bunker in
The Next Generation episode, “Brothers”. The Risan club
that Trip and Malcolm visit is a redress of the Tandaran detention center’s public room. If you look closely, the bar
features the silver hexagon adorned walls first created for the
Deep Space Nine Risian episode, “Let He Who is
Without Sin”. The large angular shelf behind the bar is reminiscent of a certain tribble infested bar on Deep
Space K-7.
