EPISODE DATA ANALYSIS
Alien Species: Mazarites, Nuvian
Stellar Phenomenon: Mazar
Historical Facts:
This episode marks the first time that Enterprise travels at Warp 5, setting a record for a Starfleet ship.
We learn that Starfleet forbids command crew from fraternizing with subordinates. It is also part of
T’Pol’s duties as first officer to monitor crew behavior.
We also have the show's first mention of the vacation planet Risa and another mention of the Vulcan’s sensitive
olfactory.
This marks the first appearance of a Vulcan shuttle on Enterprise. It looks similar in design to the Surak-class
vessels and is used to ferry V’Lar to the Vulcan ship. We also see another Surak-class Vulcan ship, the Sh’Raan.
Vulcan (and V'Lar in particular) have been dealing with the Andorians since before first contact with Earth. V’Lar
helped negotiate the first territorial accords between the two species.
Production Facts:
Irish born Tony nominated and Emmy winning actress Fionnula Flanagan appears as the cold yet wise
Ambassador V’Lar. Flanagan has also appeared as Enina Tandro in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode
"Dax," and as Data’s mother, Dr. Juliana Tainer, in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Inheritance." But
her most memorable role is that of Bertha Mills from the suspense film The Others.
John Rubinstein who plays the relentless Mazarite Captain, guest starred in the Star Trek: Voyager episode “The
37’s”. Also another Tony winner and Emmy nominated actor, Rubenstein is probably best known to genres fans
for his portrayal of the devious Linwood Murrow on Angel. One of his least known yet still very recognizable
accomplishments is his music composing contributions to the 1980’s hit television show China Beach. But his
abilities should be no surprise since his father was the internationally renowned Polish concert pianist Artur
Rubinstein. Rubenstein would go on to appear again as a Vulcan in the fourth season of Enterprise.
