EPISODE DATA ANALYSIS
Alien Species: Kantarian
Stellar Phenomenon: Kantare, Kotara Borath, Preenos, Triax
Technology Encountered: Dampening Field, Plasma Conduit
Historical Facts:
After being mentioned several times starting with the episode “Cold Front”, we finally get to meet Billy the
engineer. He is the crewman Trip asks to finish Liana’s tour of the Enterprise when he is called to see the
captain. Billy can be seen quite often, mostly working in the background throughout the rest of series. He even
picks up a single line of dialog in “These Are the Voyages”.
In this episode we find out that the ship’s transporter is useless when a dampening field is in place and that a
third of the Enterprise’s crew is female.
While looking at the Kantarian ship for salvage, Trip mentions duratanium, beryllium and dilithium as
components that the NX-01 can use, specifically duratanium to repair hull fractures.
We also learn yet another of Trip’s favorite foods, Rocky Road ice cream.
There is also another reference to Phlox’s bat.
The trader, D’Marr, mentions some interesting wares he has to peddle. He is offering something called Haljaran
spice, which looks to be very hot, and Triaxian Silk, something for T’Pol to wear.
Production Facts:
This episode features several inside “jokes” to the other series with the most blatant reference being Trip’s line,
"What'll you do then - program a holographic doctor?" This is a reference to Robert Picardo as The Doctor on
Voyager.
Trek fans will recognize Rene Auberjonois as Constable Odo from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, though they
might not recognize him without his Changeling mask. This role amkes the third character Auberjonois has
played in Trek. His first role was that of the villainous Colonel West in Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country. His
best known roles are Father Mulcahy in the film M.A.S.H. and Clayton Runnymede Endicott III on the television
comedy Benson.
Host Tom Bergeron makes a brief appearance as the trader D’Marr. This is his first appearance in Star Trek. He
is also known for hosting Trek alum Whoopi Goldberg's version of Hollywood Squares. He would appear again
as an ambassador in the fourth season episode “Demons”.
Rudolph Willrich, who plays Kuulan, has also guest starred on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: The
Next Generation.
This episode's plot is loosely based on the on Shakespeare's The Tempest and has many similarities to the
classic science fiction film Forbidden Planet. The isolationist father and lonely but loyal daughter motif has found
its way into every previous Trek series. It is no surprise that Enterprise chose to keep with tradition.
The crashed Kantarian cargo ship is actually a modified computer generated version of the Bajoran transport
first featured in the Star Trek: The Generation episode “Ensign Ro”.
The interior sets of the crashed vessel were dressed using parts and pieces from several past Trek shows. The
engine core is a combination of the second floor lighted column from Quark’s Bar on Deep Space Nine and the
science lab console from Star Trek: Voyager. We also see several consoles from the Defiant. The ship’s
computer core is the Borg interplexing beacon from Star Trek: First Contact turned upside down. One of the
ghost ships engineering consoles utilizes the interphasic cloak from Star Trek: The Next Generation episode
“The Pegasus”. The corridors and cargo bay are lavishly stocked from the Trek container arsenal, with some of
the containers dating all the way back to the second season of The Next Generation.
