EPISODE DATA ANALYSIS

Alien Species: Bolian, Gavarian

Stellar Phenomenon: Malurzian Zoo, Stameris

Technology Encountered: Anti-Matter Injector, Ferengi Energy Whip, Ferengi Transport, Jefferies Tube

Historical Facts:
This episode introduces the materialistic Ferengi to the series. To keep their official first contact with humans in
2364, the writers made sure the name of the mischievous race is never mentioned to Archer or his crew. Even
though we never hear their name we do get a several references to Ferengi concepts like Latinum, beetle snuff
and the "Rules of Acquisition”. Since this is the 22nd century, several changes have been made to denote a
different time period. For example there are only 172 "Rules of Acquisition", rather than the 285, and their familiar
head gear is missing. We also get to witness a rare use of the Ferengi energy whip weapon. It was only seen
once before in
The Next Generation episode “The Last Outpost”.

In this episode we learn that the
Enterprise has fourteen weapons lockers and is equipped with a brig.

We also get to see another crewman’s bunk and find out the location of the Captain's Quarters, indicated on a
bridge display screen. From the graphic, it appears to be on the forward starboard side of E Deck.

We also have our first glimpse of the NX-01’s Jefferies Tubes when Trip is showing the Ferengi to Archer’s vault.

Stameris, an unknown planet mentioned by the Ferengi, has a slave market that deals in sentient beings.

The Ferengi crewman Muk makes a brief reference to the Menk, the sub species on the Valakian planet. Since
the Valakians also made a reference to the Ferengi in “Dear Doctor” one would assume the two species have
had quite a bit of contact for the Ferengi to have integrated the other into its vernacular.

Production Facts:
Clint Howard, who appears as Muk, had the privalege of playing the very first alien (other than Spock) in a regular
episode of
Star Trek. At the age of seven he played the trickster Balok in "The Corbomite Maneuver".

Ethan Phillps guest stars in this episode as the Ferengi Captain Ulis. Of course fans will most recognize him as
playing the good natured Neelix on
Star Trek: Voyager but this isn't the first time he has donned the Ferengi
lobes. His first role in Trek was playing the rather nasty Ferengi Doctor in the
Star Trek: The Next Generation
episode, "Menage a Troi". He would also wear them again in the
Voyager episode "False Profits".

This is the third appearance and second character for Jeffrey Combs, best known for playing the Andorian, Shran.

The corridors of the
Enterprise E, with a new lighting scheme, paint job and detailing, were used to represent
those on the Ferengi vessel. The Ferengi bridge was a redress of the Vulcan bridge from the previous episode
“Fusion”. Several walls were removed and a few Ferengi “bubble” consoles added to achieve a different look.
The silver levered Ferengi helm console would appear again as the controls for the Xindi Insectoid ship in the
third season.

It is also interesting to note that the same cart used in Engineering to carry the Ferengi Gas Bomb bares a
striking resemblance to the carts used by the Ferengi. Other than the color and a few additional cross braces,
they look like they came from the same 22nd century supplier.

We also see a reuse of the locking mechanism used on Daniel’s quarters in “Cold Front”.
