EPISODE DATA ANALYSIS
Alien Species: Coridanites
Stellar Phenomenon: Coridan
Technology Encountered: Coridan Aircraft, Dicobalt Explosives
Historical Facts:
Coridan is a system mentioned prominently in the original series episode "Journey to Babel". By that time the
planet had been basically abandoned and unable to maintain its dilithium mining operations. In this time period,
Coridan is a thriving and fairly wealthy planet with a population of three billion. It stands to reason the civil unrest
seen here does significant damage to Coridan's fortunes and political infrastructure. It is also interesting to note
that the Vulcan’s involvement with the planet was a major factor in bringing on this downfall but with the help of
the Vulcan Ambassador Sarek, Coridan recovers and is later inducted into the Federation.
This episode establishes a few more points about the uneasy truce between the Vulcans and Andorians. The
most important piece of information is the Tau Ceti Accords, a set of peace agreements between Vulcan and
Andoria signed sometime before 2151. These agreements are quite shaky considering the difficult relationship
that still exists between the two races.
In this episode we learn that T’Pol is the first Vulcan to last more than a few weeks on a human ship. Her tenure
of six months is impressive due to our tendency to be “chaotic” and “unpredictable”.
Soval admits that Captain Gardner was the Vulcan’s first choice to captain the Enterprise. He also gives another
reference to the Vulcan Consulate
We also have our first look at Starfleet Command and Admiral Forrest’s office. Both are similar in design to their
24th Century counterparts and located in San Francisco.
We also have our first mention of Andorian Ale and see that Phlox is still eating off of T’Pol’s plate, much to her
disdain.
On a more technical note, the episode mentions the shuttlepods are equipped with plasma weapons and
constructed of ditanium. It also revealed that the Enterprise only has 15 phase pistols on board.
We are also introduced to the Vulcan ship Ni’Var, another a Surak-Class starship. It is identical to the Ti'Mur
seen in the episode "Breaking the Ice".
We are given the exact location of the Captain’s Ready Room by the beautiful zoom shot near the beginning of
the episode. It is located on the starboard side just aft of the main bridge and the window looks out over the
starboard warp faring.
Production Facts:
This episode marks the second appearances of Jeffery Combs as Shran and Gary Graham as Soval.
Gregory Itzin, best know for his role as the President on 24, plays the trigger happy Vulcan Captain, Sopek. Itzin
guest starred twice on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and once on Star Trek: Voyager. He also had a turn with
Scott Bakula on an episode of Quantum Leap.
The actress who plays the Coridan Chancellor, Barbara J. Tarbuck, played Governor Leka Trion in the Star Trek:
The Next Generation episode, "The Host." She also guest starred on Quantum Leap.
Jeff Kobor, who plays Traeg, is probably familiar to genre fans for his many and varied guest starring roles
playing villains, killers and prisoners. He has worked on such series as The X-Files, Earth 2, Supernatural, 24,
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Charmed, Alien Nation, V and Star Trek: Voyager.
Production made use of the same partial Vulcan bridge set used for the Ti’Mur. We also have yet another redress
of the Akaali village set.
