EPISODE DATA ANALYSIS

Alien Species: Targs, Xarantines

Stellar Phenomenon: Class Nine Gas Giant

Technology Encountered: Disruptors, Klingon Raptor-Class Starship, Photon Torpedoes

Historical Facts:
This episode marks the first ever peek at a Klingon galley. Besides giving us a good look at their eating habits,
we also get to see some of their food selections. They have gagh, targ plus several different types of roots and
vegetables to choose from. But despite the rather simplistic nature of the menu, I am not sure anyone would
want to eat any of it. By the look of things someone might want to call the health department.

The intense magnetic fields of a gas giant can produce EM fluctuations that a ship’s com system can pick up.
Travis used to call them "Siren calls" when he was a kid.

We have another mention of the EM-33 pistol and get a brief glimpse of the NX-01’s scientific probes.

We also learn that Klingons don’t use escape pods and they have a strong odor.

This episode also introduces photon torpedoes to the crew.

Though it is not mentioned by name, T’Pol demonstrates what may be Vulcan Neuro Pressure on Hoshi in the
Klingon galley.

We also learn the common cold has still not been cured by the 2100’s. Phlox also states that the human
common cold is mild compared to something like the Kamaraazite flu, which offers violent sneezing as a
symptom.

“Sleeping Dogs” gives us a rare glimpse of a Klingon Targ. While they are sometimes kept as pets, Klingons
also use them as food. I am not sure how tasty the ones we see here since they are completely computer
generated. All their previous high calorie appearances were the work of a pig or boar in a furry costume.

It is also interesting to note that the small Klingon scout vessel is of the Raptor-class. This would be the first and
last time the vessel is seen in
Enterprise.

Production Facts:
The role of the incapacitated Klingon captain is the second guest spot on Enterprise played by Vaughn
Armstrong.

Another member of the Trek family, Les Landau, the director of this episode, started out on
Star Trek: The Next
Generation
as a second unit director in the first two seasons. He then went on to direct 44 episodes Trek
including this one from
Enterprise.

Since this is a prequel to the previous series, the art department chose to alter the colors used for the Klingon
computer controls to reflect a different era in their history. Instead of red and gold, they chose to use greens,
blues and yellows. Despite the retro look of the computer graphics, some of the bridge stations, chairs,
viewscreen and support trusses are the same ones created for Chang’s vessel in
Star Trek: The Undiscovered
Country
. However, the bridge’s ceiling and outer structure is a redress of the Defiant’s bridge.

The holographic target emitter that Malcolm sets up in the Armory for Hoshi’s phase pistol practice is a redress
of the alien probe left in the launch bay in “Silent Enemy”.
