SYNOPSIS
While observing a unique stellar nursery, Archer and his crew encounter a peaceful group of alien monks on a
voyage of enlightenment. But after a plasma discharge almost overloads the warp core, the Enterprise crew
discover that everything is not what it appears to be and caught in the middle of a temporal confrontation between
Silik, a Suliban agent, and the time traveler Daniels. It is up to Archer to figure out whom to trust in this Temporal
Cold War just to keep his ship and the future from jeopardy.

Historical Facts:
This episode marks the introduction of the temporal agent, Daniels, who is from 900 years in the future and part
of an organization that polices temporal interference in the past. Unlike the other temporal factions, his people
have the ability to materialize and interact with the past. They also possess the ability to generate interactive
holograms from a small compact source and “phase” through solid objects with a small hand device. We also
learn the Daniels cabin number is E-14 (E Deck Cabin 14) and that his quarters were sealed for security reasons.
This is also the first time Daniels “dies” in the series.
We learn Silik’s name in this episode and that the mysterious figure he speaks with is from the future and can not
manifest physically in the past like Daniels can. We also learn this shadowy figure is a member of a temporal
faction attempting to use their time traveling communications to change the past to make gains in the future.
Despite Daniel’s being forced to track Silik using a complex technology, we find out that Porthos has no trouble at
all locating him through his keen sense of canine smell.
This episode establishes several interesting ideas that would be used throughout the series. T’Pol repeatedly
states the Vulcan opinion on time travel. They logically believe that time travel is impossible. We also have our first
mention of the Temporal Accords, an agreement between species with time traveling technology not to interfere in
the past.
This episode marks the first mention of the crew’s Movie Night. The movie featured in this episode is Night of the
Killer Androids. Even though this movie does not really exist (but give the SciFi channel some time), the NX-01
has over 50,000 movies stored in its database.
“Cold Front” also establishes there is another steward named Taylor and that the captain does not make regular
announcements to the crew about course changes.
We also have our first look at the NX-01’s starboard docking port and the enlisted crewman’s standard quarters.
Voo-Sinteel is an alcoholic spirit that supposedly enhances the observation of bright stellar phenomenon.
The Enterprise has been on its mission for four months, three weeks and six days at the time of this episode.
We also have another mention of the mysterious Chef, Jupiter Station and Porthos’ love for cheese.
Several important facts about the NX-01 propulsion system are established in this episode. We learn that the
warp reactor is called the Gravimetric Field Displacement Manifold and runs on anti-matter. The reactor also uses
a dilithium matrix and magnetic constrictors while the nacelles are used to create a subspace displacement field.
We also find out that the anti-matter injectors are located on the port side of the ship and that the NX-01 does not
presently carry technology that emits tachyons.
Production Facts:
Matt Winston, who plays Daniels, has made a name for himself playing small but memorable roles in shows
such as Friends, Charmed, Scrubs, Six Feet Under and Medium. Genre fans may recognize him for his roles in
films such as Fight Club, AI: Artificial Intelligence, Halloween H20 and Galaxy Quest. Despite his resume, this is
his first role in Star Trek and would make seven more appearances as Daniels before the end of the series. Film
fans will also be surprised to learn he is the son of the late Stan Winston, the character and special effects
designer who brought us the Terminator and the animatronic dinosaurs from Jurassic Park.
This episode was directed by Robert Duncan McNeill, the actor who played Voyager’s helmsman, Tom Paris. He
had previously helmed four episodes of Voyager with this being his first episode of Enterprise. McNeill would go
on to add three more episodes to his resume by the end of the show's run.
The control booth window in the launch bay was originally built for the shuttle bay set on the Enterprise D.
While the NX-01’s airlock is a new addition to the sickbay/circular corridor sets, the outer airlock makes use of
wall panels originally created for the Sona ship in Star Trek: Insurrection. And speaking of the Sona, Silik’s
surgery bed is a redress of one of their skin rejuvenation chairs.
