EPISODE DATA ANALYSIS
Alien Species: Nausicaans, Teneebian Skunk
Stellar Phenomenon: Dralax System, Nausicaan Asteroid Station, Vega System
Technology Encountered: J-Class Freighter, Subspace Amplifier, Y-Class Freighter
Historical Facts:
The cargo ship’s full designation is the ECS Fortunate with the prefix standing for "Earth Cargo Ship".
We learn that it is a Y-class freighter, has a maximum speed of warp 1.8 and a crew compliment of twenty-three,
not counting new born babies.
It is also revealed that a J-class freighter is a littler smaller than the Y-class, cargo vessels are usually equipped
with a low yield plasma cannon (even though most crews upgrade to something better the first chance they get)
and the cargo modules can be jettisoned from the main body of the ship.
This episode features quite a bit of personal history for Ensign Mayweather. Travis tells us he was born on a
cargo vessel called the Horizon, which his father captains. He also has a sister who is married and lives aboard
that ship as well.
Even though the NX-01 is the first of her class, we are told that there are three new NX-Class vessels in the
works, one of which will be the Columbia NX-02.
We also have our first reference to Chef, whom the captain called in several favors to get on board.
Several well placed shots from a plasma based hand weapon can puncture a vessel's outer hull.
This episode also makes reference to Jupiter Station. Jupiter Station was first introduced in the Star Trek:
Voyager episode “Tuvix".
We also hear another reference to Dralax and a mention of Vega Colony.
This is the first appearance of the Nausicaans in the series. They were first seen in the Star Trek: The Next
Generation episode “Samaritan’s Snare”. It is interesting to note that the Nausicaans' speech and appearance
is varied slightly here from their previous appearances.
When speaking with Admiral Forrest, Archer mentions that the crew is about to deploy the first subspace
amplifier. As we have learned in previous series, subspace transmissions require a boosting transceiver to
amplify the subspace signals. In the 24th Century, Starfleet would have a network of them installed throughout
Federations space. But here in the 22nd Century, Archer and company have the privilege of setting the first.
Production Facts:
Known for his distinctive voice, Danny Goldring plays the Nausicaan Captain in this episode. He previously
appeared as the Alpha Hirogen in the Star Trek: Voyager two-parter "The Killing Game", a guesting as
Cardassian and a human, on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. He would appear on Enterprise again in the second
season episode “The Catwalk”.
Lawrence Monoson also guest stared as Hovath in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode “The Storyteller”.
People will most remember him from his first film role as Gary in The Last American Virgin. Monoson also had a
role in the miniseries And the Band Played On for which he was nominated for a Cable Ace Award.
Kieran Mulroney, brother of Dermot Mulroney, plays Shaw in this episode. His first Trek role was the part of
Benzan in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “The Outrageous Okona”.
Chip Lucia, who plays the injured Captain Keene, previously appeared as Mabus in the Star Trek: Voyager
episode "Alliances". His first Trek appearance was in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Man Of The
People", as devious Ambassador Vel Alkar.
The wood paneled wall with circular windows seen behind Admiral Forrest was built for Starfleet Medical in the
pilot episode, “Broken Bow”. It would be permanently incorporated into the Admiral's office for the remainder of
the series.
The interiors for the Fortunate are an extensive redress of the Engineering corridors on the NX-01 while the
medical ward is the Decon set minus several walls. The ship’s cargo areas are redress of the Armory set and
we have seen the cargo containers quite a few times over the years. The Fortunate’s medical bay is dressed
with items from the Phlox’s Sickbay. If you look hard enough you will find a microscope and the large clear
domed specimen jars from the Enterprise D. The Fortunate’s bridge features a helm created from Chakotay’s
office desk, Odo’s security office chair for the captain seat and several consoles from the Defiant.
